Review #185: Letting shit go

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

For the last five years, since I moved out of my parent’s house, I’ve been dragging so much stuff with me and I keep collecting more. One collection of things is pretty much every drawing of mine that I can find as far back as I can remember. Why do I keep them? Maybe because I think I’ll use them someday or that when I’m dead they’ll be treasured or maybe it’s just that I don’t draw as much as I did when I was younger so I need them around to feel some sort of accomplishment.
Now,after moving this winter, I decided I was sick of all the crap that follows me around. I’m going to get rid of all my clothes I don’t wear, sell as many of my books as I can and, of course, get rid of all this worthless paper I hold onto like its worth it’s weight in gold.
I started buy sifting through the piles, not going through them carefully because if i did that I’d save too much. So I just scanned and pulled out all the bigger paintings or drawings ar things that were actually good or meaningfull. Thje rest I just tossed. There were some things that I thought I’d never get rid of, I remembered almost every drawing on every page of homework I ever did. But common sense rang through and it just wasn’t worth it to me to have these things lying around.

As you can see, there was quite a lot. I wish I had taken a before picture so you all could see how it was just crammed in there, it’s mass of rectangular shapes being the only thing saving it from amorphism. But alas… What I did was save the few works of art and handfull of nearly empty blank books I decided to keep and put them in the bottom drawer. I put my art supplies in the other drawers, all of wich had been chilling in the hall closet.

Getting rid of this stuff feels great. Really, it’s one less thing to think about and weigh me down. Sure I’m going to miss some of the fun, cool drawings I did in my youth but I’ve lost so many other things from that time. I dwell in the past too much and it hasn’t been working for me. So I’m going to start getting rid of a lot of stuuf from here on out.
Now if I could jsut deal with that storage unit I have in California.

Review #184: G#o$t R!der

Monday, February 19th, 2007

The saddest thing about this movie is that it could have been good.
No, don’t laugh, I’m serious.
IT could have been good for my standards, anyway. No, I wasn’t expecting the in-depth character development that is making the $piderm@n movies all epic and shit, but all the elements were there and the special effects were at least up to industry standards. The thing that pissed me off the most was that, even though I don’t like Nicholas Cage that much, I hated when he was G#o$t R!der even more. I actually like the Johnny Blaze character, but whenever he changed he started with the one-liners. I HATE that! Also it would have been cool to see him move around naturally when his head was on fire, but it was like the stage direction was “Okay, remember…your head and hands are on fire!” As a result every single move is a pose that simply must be stricken.
The actress who plays Roxanne, the love interest, is simply terrible. Where did they find her? she can’t act her way out of…well, anything. She can’t act!
Oh, and everyone kept pointing at things.
The bad guys all wore the same goth-rave reject coats even though they were demons. They looked super retarded. One of them, Blackheart, could have been really cool if not played by the weird kid from American Beauty.
Oh, and anything there was wherever these guys went, including G#o$t R!der, got destroyed. Cars, buildings, light bulbs. All destroyed. I bet GR himself killed a shitload of people!
Any redeeming qualities this movie had were washed away by the script. Any Hollywood cliche you can think of was there. It was shit, plain and simple.
So, like I said I could have been good. But it wasn’t.

Review #183: Changes

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Last night (2-9-07) after attending the opening part for a Bruce Nauman exhibit at the Henry, Jeremy, some friends of his and myself went to Changes for drinks. I had a lot of fun, but I think that was due more to the company than the place we were at. I’ve never been drawn to gay bars (probably because I’ve never had many gay friends) and this place didn’t convince me that they are better than any other bar.
Upon arriving, we ordered a pitcher and each had a Jello shot. The Jello shots were only $1, and were great. This was, I think, only the second one I’ve ever had because every time I’d go to a party that had them, they’d be gone. That’s what I get for being Tardy McLaterson. The pitchers were octogonal and a little wider than usual, but that’s because there was this cylinder going right up through the middle. When it was expressed to the bar thender that we thought we might be getting less beer because of this, he told us it was so that the beer stayed cold. This was laughable, seeing as how the beer would never get a chance to be warm.
We drank on the back patio and I chain smoked as we talked with some colorful (crazy) people. There was a guy (who used to be a woman) who wanted to cut our hair. When Jeremy pointed out that neither of us had hair, he used the beard-trimming angle. I don’t even trim mine like I should, I’m not paying anyone to do it. The back patio had a tv showing videos from the likes of La Bouche and Kylie Minogue ( i think).
I didn’t like the bathroom. It was a closet of a place and the urinal and toilet ar crammed right up against near each other. I DID like the stack of VHS tapes on one table. it looks like some sort of exchange thing where you can take one for a donation and leave some. maybe. I didn’t look into it too much, but it might be a nice way for me to get rid of some of my crappy tapes ( and pick up more).
Jeremy said that he used to screen guys by taking them to Sunday brunch there. He’s never taken me probably because he knows I’d fail miserably. I’m sure I would.
Will I go there again? If I’m drinking with some cool dudes who want to go there again, sure. By myself? Never.

Review #182: Stone Brewery Old Gaurdian Barley Wine style Ale

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

This ale is something quite special. First and foremost, it’s percentage is 11.23%. That packs a punch. Usually with something that strong I expect something really strong tasting, maybe with a lot of hops. Old Gaurdian, however, is remarkably smooth. As a friend said, it hardly has a bite to it. IT’s light but it gave me a fun kind of buzz I haven’t had in a while. I hope to get a few more of these in me while they are available. I think they’re $5.99 where I work.
MAn, I wish I had written this while I was drinking it so that I could elaborate more. Not so that you caould get a more in depth review, but so that the text would take up all the room along side the image to the left.

Review #181: Mint Blistex

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

One day this last week my lips were so chapped they were bleeding. I bought this stuff and within a day my lips were all soft and kissable again. Still a little dry, but not too bad. And it tastes minty.

Review # 180: Cheesy British Sub Sandwich from 7-Eleven

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

This sandwich was okay, which is good for 7 Eleven. The $3.99 price tag is about the same as any other place you can get a pre-made sandwich. I only intended to eat half and save the rest for later but ended up eating the whole thing. I guess that says something. The lettuce was green, not iceberg. That’s always a plus. As you can see from the picture the top part of the bread was really thick. I didn’t dig on that so much. I’d rather have had more roast beef. That might be greedy of me since it had roast beef, turkey AND ham on it. I will probably buy another one if I’m trying to decide on something at the 7 Eleven, just so I don’t have to take the 13 bus up the hill to Safeway.

Review# 179: Caramel Kit Kat

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

I like Kit Kats a whole bunch but, like most candy bars, the variations on the flavor didn’t go over so well. Reese’s peanut butter cups seem to by trying a lot of combinations latley as well, putting dark chocolate, caramel, marshmallows, etc in their candy. The problem I have with the inclusion of caramel in these variations is that it’s too thin, like a gel toothpaste. If you like bombarding your mouth with refined sugar, you might like this one, along with the marshmallow Take 5 bar. I like the original Take 5 bar, I think the caramel is a little more solid in that one. The runny caramel reminds me of a Carmelo wich burned my throat the last time I had one.
What I really want to try is the Blood Orange flavor Kit Kat. I found that while looking for an image for this post. Check out this blog that had a rather long list of different and interesting Kit Kat flavors. The Kit Kat I had was one of those big ones, like the first image on that page. I also saw a berry flavored one they are selling in the UK. I’m jealous.

Review #178: Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Drink

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Man, this stuff is nasty. I had one the other day and it’s not as bad as I recall it being a few years ago, but it’s still gross. It’s like chocolate milk made with carob and then diluted with water. Water is actually the first ingredient. It also contains a number of other unsavory ingredients, including the dreaded High Fructose Corn Syrup. I think I’ll stick to chocolate milk, now that I know it’s not regular milk full of cow’s blood.
