It also drives me wild when scientists and medical people say that they don't have to figure out ethical stuff because it's outside their realm of expertise. They should just say that it's because they aren't really humans  and consequently don't understand human value systems. I think that would be closer to the truth.

Where are all the discussions on the military uses of this technology?

That's a great question. I bet part of the answer to it is simply that they don't want to talk about it so that nobody takes their idea and comes to market with it first. Like sure you could make some money predicting weather, but that kind of shit is the trickle down usage that happens WAAAAY after the fact when you're looking for like 10th and 11th possible uses for your technology because your military contracts have all been tapped out...

Garrett, take this the right way: This post finally establishes that you're going to do something productive with your big brother paranoia. Standing up in a public forum to call the architects of our civilzation's downfall out on it is the definition of noble, and even if you haven't done yet, you will. I'm proud of you. I mean it.

Not "all" of us - I sure don't want to get sucked up into the machine (I say as I work on a dozen programming projects...).
But yeah, the tech-cult is particularly creepy, isn't it? They're losing their souls to Ahriman!

/me becomes that crazy hobo with the sign

Oh yeah, and the "complexity half-solved by a complex 'solution' which just generates more complexity (none of it the good kind)" is just the growth mechanism of The System. It feeds on your lifeforce. Really, everyone gets caught up in trying to solve all these problems, and for their efforts they just get more problems, which then ensnare their children, and so on.
I was thinking this morning, about all the pills that are available, and wondered when they'll start selling pills to counteract the side effects of other pills. I can hear them now "It's the only way".
Lies. The best way is to get out of such a crappy system, but we all know that already...
meh.
